جامعة درنة هيئة علمية أنشئت بقرار من السيد / أمين اللجنة الشعبية العامة رقم (858) لسنة 1994 بمدينة درنة وسميت بجامعة درنة ، وهذا قد كان تأسيسها نهوضاً وتدعيماً للنهضة العلمية والثقافية ودعما لمسيرة التطور. وكانت مدينة درنة قبل هذا التاريخ تضم ثلاث كليات جامعية تابعة لجامعة عمر المختار ، وافتتحت في العام الجامعي 1991/1992 وهي كليات ( الاقتصاد والمحاسبة / العمارة والفنون / التقنية الطبية ) وعندما صدر قرار السيد / أمين اللجنة الشعبية العامة رقم (858) لسنة 1994 بإنشاء جامعة درنة مستقلة لها صفة الاعتبارية والمستقلة مالياً وإدارياً وتسمي بجامعة درنة ضم إليها عدد من الكليات الموجودة بمدينة طبرق وهي ( الآداب / الهندسة ) كما ضم إليها ( كلية الآداب / كلية القانون بدرنة ) .
