What a domain name really is
The internet routes traffic using numeric IP addresses, for example 93.184.216.34. Numbers are hard to remember and change often, so back in 1983 the computer scientist Paul Mockapetris designed the Domain Name System to give machines a human-friendly layer of names on top of those numbers. A domain name is that human-friendly label. Think of it as a contact in your phone: the contact name is easy to remember, but under the hood it points to a specific phone number, and if the number changes you keep dialling the same contact.
A domain name is not the same thing as a website, a hosting account, or an email address, even though they often use it. The domain is only the address. The website is what someone builds and puts at that address. The email server is a separate service that also happens to sit under the same name. That is why a company can move its site to a new host and keep the same domain, or change its email provider without losing its web presence.
The parts of a domain name
Take a domain like shop.example.co.uk. It has three layers, and reading them right to left is the easiest way to make sense of them:
- The top-level domain (TLD): the final part, in this case .uk. Some TLDs are country-specific (called ccTLDs) like .de, .fr or .jp. Others are generic (called gTLDs) like .com, .org, .net or newer ones such as .shop or .app.
- The second-level domain: the part right before the TLD, here .co. In the UK, .co.uk is the common commercial second level under .uk. In most gTLDs the second level is the actual brand name, like example in example.com.
- The main name and subdomains: example is the registered name and shop is a subdomain. Subdomains let one owner split a site into sections, for example blog.example.com, help.example.com and shop.example.com, all under one registration.
The www you sometimes see is technically a subdomain too. Most modern sites treat www.example.com and example.com as the same destination, but the site owner has to configure that.
How a domain name actually gets you to a website
When you type a domain in the address bar, a chain of lookups happens in milliseconds:
- Your browser asks a DNS resolver (usually run by your internet provider, or by services like Cloudflare or Google) for the IP address that belongs to the domain.
- The resolver walks up the DNS tree, from the root servers to the TLD servers to the authoritative name servers set by the domain owner, until it finds the answer.
- The resolver returns the IP address to your browser, which then opens a connection to the server at that address and asks for the page.
The 13 logical root name server clusters at the top of that tree are operated by 12 different organisations worldwide, and any change to the DNS root is coordinated through IANA, a function of ICANN. If DNS breaks, entire regions of the internet go dark even though the underlying servers are still healthy. That is exactly what people mean when they say “DNS is the phonebook of the internet”.
How big is the domain-name world?
Three concrete numbers are worth knowing:
- According to Verisign’s Domain Name Industry Brief, there were roughly 362 million registered domain names across all TLDs at the end of 2023.
- The single largest TLD is still .com, which alone accounts for around 158 million registrations, well ahead of every other extension.
- A standard .com registration typically costs USD 10 to 15 per year at mainstream registrars, though prices vary by TLD and by registrar.
Country-code TLDs together make up a big share of the market too. For example .de (Germany) had over 17 million registrations and .cn (China) over 20 million as of the same period. New TLDs like .online, .shop or .xyz are growing but remain a small slice compared to .com.
How to register a domain (the honest version)
You do not “buy” a domain forever. You lease it from a registrar for a period, usually one to ten years, and you renew before it expires. If you let it lapse, someone else can pick it up. In practice the process looks like this:
- Search for an available name at a domain registrar (for example Namecheap, GoDaddy, IONOS, Cloudflare Registrar or your local equivalent).
- Pick the TLD that fits: .com for a global brand, a country code for a local audience, or a specialty TLD if it matches your niche.
- Complete the WHOIS contact details. Since GDPR came into force in 2018, most personal registrant data is masked in public WHOIS lookups, but the registrar still needs valid contact info from you.
- Point the domain at your hosting or website builder by editing its DNS records (usually A, AAAA or CNAME records).
- Turn on auto-renewal. The single most common way people lose a domain is forgetting to renew it.
Prices vary a lot. Premium names on the aftermarket can go for four, five or six figures. New standard registrations for a plain .com are typically under 15 USD a year at reputable registrars.
What a domain name can and cannot tell you about a site
A domain is only an address, not a certificate of trust. That is important because scam sites use registered domains too. What a domain name can tell you:
- The extension gives context. A .gov or .edu address is restricted and hard to fake. A .com or .shop extension is open to anyone.

Is a domain name the same as a URL?
No. A URL is a full web address, for example https://www.example.com/products/shoes. The domain name is only the example.com part in the middle. The URL also includes the protocol (https), any subdomain (www) and the specific page path.
Can I own a domain forever?
Not literally. You lease it from a registrar under a yearly (or multi-year) contract. As long as you renew on time, no one else can take it. If you forget to renew, the domain re-enters the market after a grace period.
Is a .com always better than a country-code TLD?
No. A .com is a strong default for a global brand, but a country-code TLD like .de, .co.uk or .fr often performs better with a local audience and can carry more trust in local markets. Choose the TLD that matches where your visitors actually live.
Does buying a domain give me a website?
