Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom in the north-east of the island of Ireland. It shares a border with the Republic of Ireland to the south and west. As of 2001, its population was 1,685,000, constituting about 30% of the island's total population and about 3% of the population of the United Kingdom. Since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, Northern Ireland is largely self-governing. According to the agreement, Northern Ireland co-operates with the rest of Ireland from which it was partitioned in 1921 on some policy areas, while other areas are reserved for the Government of the United Kingdom, though the Republic of Ireland "may put forward views and proposals". Northern Ireland was for many years the site of a violent and bitter inter-communal conflict the Troubles which was caused by divisions between nationalists, who are predominantly Roman Catholic, and unionists, who are predominantly Protestant.

Before 1921 all of Ireland was represented by a single side, the Ireland national football team, organised by the Irish Football Association. In 1921, the jurisdiction of the IFA was reduced to Northern Ireland following the secession of clubs in the soon-to-be Irish Free State, although its team purported to remain the national team for all of Ireland until 1950, and used the name ''Ireland'' until the mid-1970s. The Football Association of Ireland organises the separate Republic of Ireland national football team. On 18 February 1882, fifteen months after the founding of the Irish FA, Ireland made their international debut against England, losing 13 0 in a friendly played at Bloomfield in Belfast.
