It was invented by David Graston and developed into several different narratives and techniques related to certain brands: ASTYM, Graston Technique, SASTM, HawkGrips, Smart Tools etc.

Ironically, David Graston is a person who stands behind SASTM now and is not connected to modern Graston Technique.

IASTM is a method that can be classified under fascia release techniques.
