I have taken a couple of courses through the Canadian Photography Learning Centre (CPLC), namely the On Camera Flash Workshop AND the Getting Proper Exposures course. The following review is of the latter, which I completed March 10/15.
I applied for the Getting Proper Exposures course based on the information outlined on the CPLC Web Site. I was particularly drawn to two of the objectives listed under that course title, namely, "Students will have the opportunity to "solve" the exposure challenge themselves first, but also be guided by the instructor through to the final result when they struggle ..." AND "Students will engage in group problem solving as the instructor sets up a tethered camera to expose for a variety of different exposure challenges, the results...showing up on the projection screen for students to discuss and analyze together..." In my opinion the first objective was not adequately addressed; as for the second, it did not happen. I was informed by a CPLC Administrative Staff Member that "We haven't been doing this for quite some time...given your disappointment in this aspect, I will update the website to reflect that is not done anymore."
In addition the class was provided with a 'workbook' which we only worked through approximately one-fifth of the projects listed. Yet, our homework assignments were based primarily on the contents of the projects not covered in the 'workbook'. In other words, we were expected to work through them on our own. When I inquired as to why the majority of the 'course content' had not been covered, I was informed by the same CPLC Administrative Staff Member that "this specific class in particular diverges from the book, creates new exercises, and specifically doesn't do exercises listed in the book, as it is run differently every time. We can add that description to the website..."
We were NOT informed of such at the beginning of the first class; and the majority of the homework assignments WERE from the 'workbook'. The question rises as to why a 'workbook' was handed out, if it had nothing to do with the content of the course.
To conclude, I was disappointed in the course and, more to the point, I feel that I entered into a 'contract' with the Canadian Photography Learning Centre that was not fulfilled.
